Recently marriages and weddings have differed in Nigeria. Nigerian weddings are grossly ostentatious and elitist with many people investing their life time savings/resources on the weddings and forgetting about the realities of marriage.
Our ideologies are fraught with materialism and conceded mirages, our expectations in marriage are unethical and unrealistic.
Marriage is a divine contract between a man and woman that is incomplete without a pure intention and devotion to please the Almighty.
Today’s youth have larger than life dream weddings which have lead to deviations from the initial purpose for which marriage inculcates to forming wondrous and imaginative fantasies that is seemingly caprice or dreams of utopia.
Most youths today forget to commit their choices in life to prayers and especially the choice of a spouse which they based on a fairy tale man made designed character that is seldom in existence, most young men form a mental image of their would be spouse rather finding a partner with a realistic qualities.
While ladies mostly based their choice on materialism and physical appearance having in mind disney’s idea of romance and a happily ever after theme like that of sleeping beauty.
Most youth are hit by reality almost immediately after marriage even before the expiration of the western invented “honeymoon”.They come to terms with reality and often end up silently saying “had I known, I would have been practical and realistic in making a choice of who to marry”.
While we continue to leave these issues of larger than life dream weddings to practical choice of spouse un addressed, the debris of larger than life weddings and dreams of Prince charming and a belle will continue to derive myriad of problems in our society and with these trends, divorce and unhappy marriages will continue to soar to all time high picking on the realities that umbrella married couples after the usual big wedding.
