THE POWER OF PINK FLEUR
Pink Fleur is one of the fashion brands gradually taking over the Nigerian fashion scene, it is now a favourite of many women. Established in 2013, Pink Fleur is a fast growing fashion enterprise. Today we look at the person behind the success, the CEO of Pink Fleur herself; Hajiya Zainab Salihijo – Jidda.
Zainab was born to a Fulani family from Adamawa state. Although she went to school and eventually graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from a university overseas, Zainab’s passion for style and fashion has always been a part of her. After attaining her degree, she came back to Nigeria for the mandatory youth service. It was during her service, late in the year 2012, that the idea to create a fashion brand occurred to her.
With determination to make something of her talent, she was someone who made her own clothes. She regularly found herself being asked who her tailor is and complimented on her clothes. She put her idea in action of creating clothes for others with her monthly NYSC allowance to officially start her brand in 2013 by using a garage as her first studio.
Pink Fleur is brand that makes clothes and focuses on creating “aesthetic for the contemporary woman”. The aim is to make clothes for the modest woman – Muslims and Christians alike- with a good liking for fashion. She uses her knowledge on tailoring and her keen sense of style in creating unique twists on day to day outfits.
She believes that “Style is based on one’s personality” making it her task to create items that people of different tastes in style would be happy to wear.
Her latest project is Style Scenery, a platform for new business owners, fashion designers and entrepreneurs to get help and advice on running their businesses. It gives the entrepreneurs the opportunity to come together and network while exposing their businesses. Being one who also started small, she realised how hard it is to expand, explore and fully understand the industry and found that giving others the chance to get advice and an opportunity that she wasn’t able to get would assist others.
For those working in the fashion business, her tip is when working with people, finding employees that can translate you and your customers’ ideas correctly and understanding them should become top priority, especially in the case of tailors. Having excellent staff is to balancing out her work and her family. Being a mother and a wife, she needs to be there for her family, and having good workers that are loyal and can stand and do the work without her presence enables her to be around for them.
Also as a fashion designer, one constantly needs electricity, which proves to be a challenge for a fashion entrepreneur in Nigeria due to the constant power shortage, but she doesn’t allow that to deter her from the work at hand. Through this all she also states that exercising patients and tolerance is necessity for without it a good working relationship with both her clients and employees would not be possible.
A woman on the rise, Zainab plans to take Pink Fleur to new heights. With Pink Fleur being available in Abuja, Kaduna and Lagos, she hopes to expand her brand to other states and even to other counties when the opportunity presents itself. In addition, the inclusion of male clothing line to the Pink Fleur collection is to happen in the near future.
During her leisure time she enjoys getting a good book to read, saying that reading novels helps her relax and lets her mind roam freely. She also loves spending time with her husband and her adorable baby boy, for family is everything and being there for them will always be her first priority.
With constant support from her family, friends and even customers, it is no surprise to see that for a business coming up to its 5th year. It has achieved so much more than what one would expect. Approximately over 150 items are sold instore monthly and the number continues to rise promisingly, it is a very much expected that this is just the beginning for Hajiya Zainab and the large success she is bound to achieve by the looks of it. Her advice for other starting entrepreneurs to not be afraid of starting small and gradually growing because one can start a business with as little as a few thousands, and rushing may lead to a quick downfall. Her belief is that believing in one’s self is required for without self-belief one wouldn’t be motivated to put effort to become the best of what they can be.
